Final Film Farewell

It's now the end of an era.

Camera manufacturer Nikon has announced that it will no longer make film camera and instead will concentrate on the profitable digital camera division.

The news comes as Kodak tries to reinvent itself after its film and processing chemical division was savaged by the widespread use of digital cameras.

While digital camera can take terrific snapshots, not all cameras are the same. The number of megapixels is vital. And the more the merrier.

Although it doesn't matter if you set your camera to the lowest resolution in order to squeeze a few more pictures of great aunt Molly's birthday party, don't be tempted to be skimpy if your planning to use your pictures for business brochures, advertisements or signage.

Digital cameras record everything at 72 dpi (computer screen resolution). Printing often requires a resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch), so the higher the megapixels, the larger you can print at a decent resolution.

UPDATE: KONICA Minolta will withdraw from the camera and colour film businesses, marking the end to one of the best known brands in the photography world.

As part of the surprise move, Konica Minolta said it would sell a portion of its digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera assets to Sony for an undisclosed sum and cease production of compact cameras by March.
